Briem began her acting career at age 9 in the National Theater in Iceland. She was a child actor in Iceland and was a part of TV and radio plays. Briem aged 16 moved to London and took part in the production of Lenin In Love at The New End Theater. At 19 years of age, Briem was accepted at the world-renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, where she studied for the next three years. She obtained a degree in Drama and also won the John Barton Prize in the category of Scenic Fight.
